Jefry Marte hits HR in 1st start as Tigers beat Mariners, 5-4
Making his first start in Major League Baseball, rookie Jefry Marte got an RBI double for his first hit and added a solo homerun in the 4th inning to help the Detroit Tigers defeat the Seattle Mariners, 5-4.
Marte doubled during a three-run 2nd inning and scored moments later. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez (8-7) got the win for Detroit and closer Joakim Soria put two runners on base in the 9th inning before wrapping up the game for his 19th save in 21 attempts.
Before the All-Star break, the Tigers will head back to the midwest to face the Minnesota Twins at Target Field for a four-game weekend series. The first game begins this Thursday night at 8 pm.
