Unable to get clutch hits, Tigers go down in Boston, 4-3
Carl Crawford's single in the ninth inning lifted the Boston Red Sox over the Detroit Tigers, 4-3. The Tigers had plenty of chances to pull out a win with 10 hits, but left 10 men on base and left the bases loaded twice.
In the top of the 9th inning, Brandon Inge, celebrating his 34th birthday, and Austin Jackson got on base with singles and Scott Sizemore walked to load the bases, but then Brennan Boesch swung through three straight fastballs and Miguel Cabrera struck out swinging to end the inning.
Despite striking out nine batters, Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander gave up three earned runs on six hits and no walks in eight innings before being relieved by Al Alburquerque.
Detroit will look to break out of their current slump when they travel to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates in interleague play this weekend. The first game begins this Friday night at 7:05 pm.
