Porcello's pitching helps Tigers shut down Pirates, 2-0
The Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak behind an outstanding eight innings from Rick Porcello as Detroit defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0. Casper Wells’ RBI single in the second inning and Jhonny Peralta’s homerun in the fourth accounted for the scoring.
Porcello (4-2) took a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up a leadoff double by Ronny Cedeno. He struck out three and walked two in his first start in nearly two weeks.
After a long weekend on the road, the Tigers return home to Comerica Park for a 10-game home stretch. Currently being 7 games behind the first-place Cleveland Indians in the AL Central, Detroit has a chance to be in the top spot by the middle of next week.
It all begins this Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are battling for the top spot in the AL East. Game time is set for 7:05 pm, however, the forecast is calling for a chance of rain and even a thunderstorm in the area.
