Jim Thome hits his 600th HR as Tigers lose to Twins, 9-6
Once again, history has been made in Detroit at Comerica Park. However, it's one the Tigers wish they could've prevented. Jim Thome hit his 600th home run an inning after he hit No. 599 to help the Minnesota Twins outslug Detroit, 9-6.
The 40-year-old Thome became the eighth player to reach 600, hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning for No. 599, then a three-run shot in the seventh. The milestone came on a 2-1 pitch from Daniel Schlereth.
Both homers were hit to the opposite field. When No. 600 went over the fence. Only Babe Ruth needed fewer at-bats to reach 600, doing so in 6,921. Thome’s milestone came in No. 8,167.
Recently acquired from Minnesota, Delmon Young homered in his first at-bat for Detroit, and Alex Avila finished a homer shy of the cycle.
Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson provided comments after the game
