Russian goalie rejoins the NHL with the Red Wings
Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland announced that the team has signed free agent goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Originally selected by San Jose in the ninth round (219th) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Nabokov appeared in 563 games with the Sharks over the course of his ten seasons with the team. A native of Kamenogorsk , Kazakhstan , the 34-year-old puck stopper has a posted a career record of 293-178-29-37 in addition to a 2.39 G.A.A. and 0.912 SV%. He is one of only two players in NHL history to win at least 40 games in three consecutive seasons (Martin Brodeur is the other).
In 80 career playoff appearances with San Jose , Nabokov earned 40 victories while registering a G.A.A of 2.29 and a SV% of 0.914. The 6’0”, 200 lb. netminder won the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year in 2001, was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender in 2008, and backstopped Russia to a Gold Medal at the 2008 IIHF World Championships after registering a tournament-best G.A.A. of 1.78 in addition to a 0.929 SV% and two shutouts.
