Connecticut & Los Angeles open playoffs with wins

After Tina Charles collected her first WNBA MVP award, she finished the night with 17 points & four blocks to power the Connecticut Sun to a 65-60 victory over the New York Liberty in their playoff opener. Asjha Jones had 10 points, nine rebounds & four assists for Connecticut. Kara Lawson also added eight points, six rebounds, & five assists for the Sun. Game 2 of the best-of-three Eastern Conference semifinal series will be at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey this Saturday at 7 p.m.

Kristi Toliver tied her career high with 29 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 45 seconds remaining as the Los Angeles Sparks beat the San Antonio Silver Stars, 93-86, in the opening game of the Western Conference semifinals. L.A.'s Candice Parker, runner-up for the league's MVP award, added 25 points and Alana Beard finished with 18 points. Game 2 is Saturday in San Antonio will be at the Freeman Coliseum instead of the AT&T Center due to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert.
