Former Shock Swin Cash wins MVP as East wins All-Star Game
Four-time All-Star Katie Douglas capped one of the closest WNBA midseason showcases ever by hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer with 56.7 seconds left as the Eastern Conference hung on for just its third All-Star game victory over the West, 118-113 in the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game, held in San Antonio.
Once a member of the 3-time WNBA champion Detroit Shock (now residing in Tulsa), Seattle Storm's Swin Cash led the West with 21 points and 12 rebounds and was named MVP for the second time. Former WNBA star Lisa Leslie is the only other player with multiple All-Star MVP awards. Cash, Seattle’s four-time All-Star, was also named MVP in 2009. She is also the league’s first All-Star MVP from the losing team.
At halftime, Katie Smith, who also lead the Detroit Shock to championship glory, was named among the WNBA’s Top 15 players of all-time, in celebration of this league’s 15th season. The other 14 players mentioned were Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Tamika Catchings, Yolanda Griffith, Becky Hammon, Lauren Jackson, Ticha Penicheiro, Cappie Pondexter, Dawn Staley, Diana Taurasi, Tina Thompson, & Teresa Weatherspoon.
