In a game of wild swings and wild swings of emotion, the Detroit Tigers took a 4-0 lead into the 9th inning before Raul Ibanez struck again, hitting a tying, two-run homerun with two outs off of closer Jose Valverde that turned a somber crowd into a delirious one. Then in the 12th inning, Derek Jeter broke his left ankle moments after Detroit's Delmon Young doubled home the go-ahead run to give the Tigers a 6-4 win over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.
Jeter rolled when he dove in an attempt to glove Jhonny Peralta's grounder up the middle in the 12th inning. Unable to move, he flipped the ball toward the mound. His leg was dangling as he was assisted to the dugout by manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donahue.

Later in the night, it was confirmed that due to Jeter's broken left ankle, he will indefinetely miss the rest of the postseason. The doctors stated that it will take a good three months for Jeter to recover and it will not jeopardize his career.
Meanwhile, on Detroit's end, Young became the team's hero as he drove in three runs, hitting an RBI single in a two-run 6th inning against Andy Pettitte, and a solo homerun in the 8th inning against Derek Lowe.
In Game 2 on Sunday afternoon, New York, without their star player in the lineup, will start Hiroki Kuroda, who will be pitching on three days' rest for the first time in his big league career. Detroit will send Anibal Sanchez to the mound as the Tigers look to take advantage of the Yankees' situation.
