Scherzer helps with offense & defense as Tigers beat Mets, 3-0
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer delivered a key RBI double against young Mets ace Matt Harvey in a rematch of this year's All-Star game as the Detroit Tigers shut out the New York Mets for a 3-0 victory.
Scherzer went six innings to improve to 19-1 on the season, who became only the third pitcher in league history to win 19 of his first 20 decisions. The last was Roger Clemens in 2001 when he went 19-1 with the New York Yankees when he was 38.
Reliever Joaquin Benoit pitched a perfect 9th inning to pick up his 17th save – a perfect 14-for-14 since he was named the closer in June. The Tigers will aim to sweep the weekend interleague series with the Mets this Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
