Michigan survives UConn; MSU & MAC teams suffer losses
After surviving Akron by four points last week, the #15 Michigan Wolverines had to do the same again against the Connecticut Huskies, 24-21, on the road at Rentschler Field. Trailing 21-7 early in the 3rd quarter, Michigan rallied late to start the season off at 4-0.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish held on to defeat the Michigan State Spartans for a third straight time, 17-13, at Notre Dame Stadium, amid controversial pass-interference calls. This was the 10th of the past 14 meetings between these teams decided by a touchdown or less, as they head into a two-year break with the next meeting scheduled for 2016 in East Lansing.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles fell hard to the Ball State Cardinals, 51-20, at Rynearson Stadium. EMU was able to score the first touchdown of the Mid-American Conference opening matchup, but four turnovers plagued the Eagles in Eastern's homecoming game.
CMU's sophomore running back Saylor Lavallii ran for a career-high 144 yards and a touchdown, but the Central Michigan Chippewas were unable to overcome four turnovers in a 38-17 loss on 'Traditions Day' to the Toledo Rockets. UT's running back David Fluellen rushed for 197 yards and two scores to help the Rockets down the Chippewas in the MAC opener for both teams at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The Western Michigan Broncos were completely wiped out as they suffered their first-ever loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 59-3, at Kinnick Stadium. Western’s defense held the Iowa offense to just 160 yards in the first half, but two punt returns for touchdowns by Kevonte Martin-Manley and an interception return for a touchdown changed the makeup of the game.
