Baltimore & Kansas City sweep their way into the ALCS
For Detroit, another AL Central division title and that's as far as they could go...again. In the 6th inning, Nelson Cruz knocked in a two-run homerun as the Baltimore Orioles held off the Tigers, 2-1, to complete the ALDS sweep and to reach the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1997.
It's the first time in over 100 years that the Tigers were swept in their opening series of the playoffs. The only other time they were swept in the first round was during the 1907 World Series run. Baltimore will begin the ALCS this Friday.
In front of over 40,000 fans at Kauffman Stadium, Alex Gordon hit a bases-clearing double in the 1st inning and Eric Hosmer & Mike Moustakas each homered as the wild-card Kansas City Royals finished off a three-game sweep of the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels with a convincing 8-3 victory in the American League Division Series.
The Royals will have a few days to rest before opening the AL Championship Series against the Orioles this Friday night in Baltimore. Kansas City went 4-3 against the O's in the regular season.
