Memphis wins hard-"fought" Miami Beach Bowl in 2OT, 55-48
Paxton Lynch threw four touchdown passes & rushed for three more and Jake Elliott kicked a 54-yard field goal to end the first overtime as the Memphis Tigers rallied to defeat the BYU Cougars in double OT, 55-48, in the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl.
Memphis won their first bowl game since 2005 and reached double-digits in wins for the first time in 76 years. The 10 wins this season matched Memphis' total from the previous four seasons combined.
Roderick Proctor caught an 11-yard pass from Lynch to give Memphis up in the second overtime, and from there, the action became more intense.
After DaShaughn Terry sealed the win by picking off BYU quarterback Christian Stewart in the second OT, tensions and emotions took over. Dozens of people from both sidelines spilled toward the middle of the field, many of whom were punching and grabbing. Cameras caught BYU defensive back Kai Nacua -- who had blood streaming from his face -- coming from behind to punch Memphis tight end Alan Cross in the head, who was being restrained a Tigers' staff member.
Lynch threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns, including a 5-yarder to Keiwone Malone with 45 seconds left in regulation on 4th-and-4, which was his second fourth-down conversion on the Tigers' final drive of regulation.
