McCann's walkoff HR completes Tigers' comeback vs. Sox, 5-4
Detroit rookie James McCann's solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning completed a dramatic comeback as the Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox, 5-4. Detroit trailed 4-0 before scoring four runs in the 8th inning off Chicago's starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija.
McCann has two game-ending homeruns in the first 61 games of his career. The last player to achieve that feat was Tim Salmon of the then-California Angels, whose second HR came in 1993 in just his 40th game. Victor Martinez had the game's other big hit -- a three-run double that tied the game at four in the 8th inning.
After taking Monday off, the Tigers will return to Comerica Park to start a three-game series with the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates. The first game is set to begin this Tuesday night at 7 pm with Justin Verlander starting for Detroit after recovering from back stiffness.
