Oakland eliminated; Michigan dominates Vols
The state of Michigan already lost the Spartans Thursday in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. On Friday in the west region, they got some good news and some bad news for Day 2.
The bad news is that the #13 Oakland Golden Grizzlies fought a good battle against #4 Texas, but the Longhorns managed to avoid an upset, 85-81. The Grizzlies tried to rally late in the 2nd half, but time ran on a season in which they claimed the Summit League Championship.
The good news is that the #8 Michigan Wolverines dominated the #9 Tennessee Volunteers, 75-45 where normally a 8-9 matchup is close. The Wolverines had five players in double digits, including Zack Novak, who led the team with 14 points & 10 rebounds. Up next for Michigan is a third round Sunday showdown with their old nemesis, #1 Duke. Some may remember U-M's Fab Five days, back in 1992, when they faced former Detroit Piston Grant Hill & his Duke Blue Devils for the national championship. The 2011 game is set for 2:45 pm in Charlotte, NC.
WRAPPING UP THE 2ND ROUND...
- #5 Arizona survived against # 12 Memphis, 77-75. Arizona's Derrick Williams blocked Memphis' shot at the buzzer that would've tied it & sent the game into overtime.
- In mild upsets, #10 Florida State defeated #7 Texas A&M, 57-50 and #11 Marquette beat #6 Xavier, 66-55.
- #11 VCU came up with the upset of the day by defeating #6 Georgetown, 74-56.
