Michigan’s star quarterback Denard Robinson threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree with 2 seconds left to lift the Wolverines to a thrilling 35-31 win over Notre Dame. During a wild last minute in the game, three touchdowns were made, first from Michigan, then Notre Dame with about 30 seconds left, and then the game-winner by Michigan. When Michigan Stadium was vibrant under the lights at night for the first time ever, with an NCAA-record crowd of 114,804. the Wolverines (2-0) won three straight against the rival Irish (0-2) on late-game plays by their quarterbacks. Last year at Notre Dame, Robinson ran for a touchdown with 27 seconds left, and Tate Forcier threw a TD pass against the Irish two years ago with 11 seconds left.
It's the first time Michigan has beaten Notre Dame three straight times since 1908.
Michigan State’s defense allowed one first down in the game and recorded a shutout for the first time since 2008. The offense did its part as well, rolling up 188 yards rushing, 246 yards passing and 434 yards of total offense as the Spartans scored on all five of their drives in the first half to take a 27-0 lead and went on to beat the Florida Atlantic Owls, 44-0, at Spartan Stadium. Next week, MSU takes a trip to South Bend to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who suffered two straight losses, both of which were close games.
The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in the final 20 minutes to rally past Central Michigan, 27-13, at Commonwealth Stadium in Kentucky. The Chippewas (1-1 overall) controlled play for the better part of a half, out-gaining UK 227-94 and holding a two-to-one advantage in time of possession in the first half, before the Wildcats (2-0) scored a pair of lightning-fast touchdowns to swing momentum in their favor.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles combined a strong rushing game with a stingy defensive effort to record a 14-7 win over Alabama State in Rynearson Stadium at EMU. The victory gave head coach Ron English's Eagles a perfect 2-0 record to start the season, which is the first time since the 1989 campaign that an EMU football squad won its first two games to start a season.
The Western Michigan Broncos authored a suffocating defensive performance against Nicholls State in which they did not allow an offensive point as the Broncos defeated the Colonels, 28-7 in the 2011 home opener at Waldo Stadium at WMU. With the win, the Broncos improve to 1-1 overall, and head coach Bill Cubit is now 6-1 in home openers as the Broncos' coach.
