Adam Dunn hit a two run homer deep into the right field seats off of Jose Valverde in the ninth inning to go up 3-2, and beat the Tigers. This was the first time in seventy eight games that Detroit had lost when going past the seventh inning with a lead. It was Valverde’s second blown save of the year after he was flawless in 49 chances last season. This was after Tiger starter Max Scherzer pitched a great game allowing only one run on four hits, while striking out nine, and giving up no walks.

Scherzer had been working on his pitching mechanics all week, and appeared to have his problems solved. Tough to pitch that well and not figure in the decision, but such is baseball. The White Sox starter Gavin Floyd also pitched well giving up just two runs on eight hits while striking out six batters over seven innings of work. Nate Jones got the win for the sox (1-0), and Addison Reed recorded his first career save striking out Austin Jackson with two runners aboard for the final out of the game.

The Tigers scored their two runs in the second inning with RBI singles from Dirks and Jackson. The White Sox came within one run with a solo shot from Paul Konerko in the seventh inning. Alejandro Aza singled in the ninth, stole second, and was sacrificed down to third before Dunn’s 422 foot shot to the right- field seats gave Chicago the 3-2 win. The Tigers hope to take the rubber game Sunday sending Rick Porcello to the mound while Chicago counters with Dylan Axelrod.
