David Ortiz put the Red Sox on the board first, hitting a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Boston went up 2-0 when Jacoby Ellsbury singled in Jose Iglesias in the fifth. Detroit tied it up in their part of the fifth, when Torii Hunter singled in Andy Dirks and Brayan Pena making it 2-2. Boston took the lead in the eighth inning on a single by David Ortiz scoring Shane Victorino to go up 3-2.
Boston starter John Lackey pitched seven innings allowing just the two runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Jose Alverez started for Detroit tonight giving up just two runs on five hits but did not factor in the decision. Phil Coke gave up the go ahead run in the eighth inning. Drew Smyly took over and got his third win of the season shutting down the Red Sox in the eighth and ninth. Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey walked Victor Martinez in the bottom of the ninth, and then surrendered a two-run game winning homer to Jhonny Peralta giving the Tigers the 4-3 victory. Detroit hopes for two in a row when they send Doug Fister (6-4, 3.21) to the mound to face Jon Lester (6-4, 4.37) on Friday night at Comerica Park for a 7:08 start.
