Coyotes eliminate Nashville; Rangers win off penalties
A pair of power-play goals on the same high-sticking penalty against Washington's Joel Ward turned what seemed to be a sure loss into one of the most thrilling wins in Rangers history as Brad Richards scored the tying goal with 7.6 seconds remaining in regulation and Marc Staal completed the comeback when he scored the winner 1:35 into overtime to give New York a 3-2 victory over the Capitals in Game 5. With a 3-2 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Rangers will look to wrap it up in Game 6 this Wednesday night in Washington.
Capping a momentous day, the Phoenix Coyotes celebrated news of a new owner with a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators to reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time ever after 33 years as an NHL franchise. Before the game started, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the tentative agreement to sell the Coyotes to former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison. With news of new ownership and a series win, the Coyotes will remain in Phoenix and await the arrival of their conference finals opponent & Pacific Division rival Los Angeles Kings.
