What an exciting night at Comerica park tonight. 41,661 fans got to watch Justin Verlander, last year's AL MVP and Cy Young award winner pitch a one hit shutout. The Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 in the first inter-league game of the year. Justin made it look effortless tonight spotting a pinpoint fastball, along with a nasty breaking ball. The Pirates were miffed all night, striking out twelve times during the contest. Detroit scored two runs in the first, fourth, and seventh innings. Cabrera, and Fielder both contributed RBI doubles in the first inning. Delmon Young hit a solo shot in the fourth, and a double in the seventh to help round out the scoring.
Justin had the crowd on its feet in the ninth, just two outs away from becoming only the sixth pitcher in MLB history to record three career no-hitters, when Josh Harrison singled to right field to end the hitless streak. The fans showed their respect with a standing ovation, and the right-hander quickly ended the game with a couple of groundouts. The Tigers send rookie Drew Smyly (1-0) 2.31 ERA to the mound Saturday afternoon with a 4:05 start to face A.J. Burnett (1-2) 5.12 ERA.
