Magglio Ordonez officially retired as a Detroit Tiger today. In front of of Tiger ownership, management, his beautiful family, and the press. Ordonez had a spectacular 15 year major league career with the Chicago White Sox, and the Detroit Tigers. The first eight years in Chicago were prolific. In the five years prior to the 2004 season, Ordonez hit at least .300 with 29 home runs and 99 RBI. He reached the 30-home run, 100 RBI Plateau in four of those seasons. He also hit over 70 extra-base hits from 2001 to 2003.Two knee surgeries resulting from a collision with second baseman Willie Harris on a routine catch brought his career with the White Sox to an end. Magglio's career was ressurected in 2005 when the Detroit Tigers took a chance, and signed him to a five-year 85 million dollar contract. In the press conference today, Mr. Illich said that Ordonez struck him as a leader, and he knew then that he wanted him on his team. Mr. Illitch told the story that Magglio asked him what he wanted from him. Mr. Illitch took out a Red Wing championship ring and said; one of these, but for baseball.

Magglio got off to a rough start with Detroit straining an abdominal muscle keeping him out for the first three months of the season. He returned in July hitting over 300 in the clean-up spot. Magglio's 2006 season was one for the ages. He returned to all-star form in 2006 as an injury replacement for Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez. At the break, Magglio was hitting .312 with 16 home runs, and 62 RBI on a Tigers team that was a majo-league best 59-29 at the break. October 14, 2004 was a night for the Tiger history books. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, and a 1-0 count Ordonez hit a three-run walk-off homer off Athletics pitcher Huston Street to finish the sweep, and send the Tigers to their first World Series since 1984. The Tigers would fall to the St. Louis Cardinals in five games. The ride was unforgettable though to the team and the fans.

Mr Illitch, Mr. Dombrowski, and manager Jim Leyand all had nothing but the highest praise for Magglio with Leyland becoming emotional when he recalled the greatness, professionalism, and respect that Magglio showed every day. Magglio's greatest statistical season would come in 2007. He claimed the AL batting title hitting .363 with 28 home runs and 139 RBI. It was the best season for a Tiger since Norm Cash's .361-41-132 performance in 1961. In 2010 Ordonez recorded his 2000th hit, and was on track for another great season, when he fractured his ankle sliding home. He would sit out the rest of the 2010 season recuperating. On December 16, 2010 the Tigers re-signed Ordonez to a 1-year $10 million contract. On October 8, 2011 in a playoff game with the Texas Rangers Magglio re-fractured his ankle and would go on to miss the rest of the 2011 postseason.
Magglio would finally end his career as a Tiger, culminating with the festivities today. The Tigers held a press conference and an on-field tribute to him prior to today's game. the fans stood and cheered for their hero "Maggs" one last time. When asked waht his future holds, he said that he was going to stay in the United States, spend time with his family, and just relax. With the career that he had he definitely deserves it.
