Justin Verlander 16-8 pitched eight innings giving up just two runs on nine hits while striking out eight batters without a walk. Royals starter Luke Hochevar (8-15) was not so lucky, as he gave up six runs, five earned on twelve hits going 7 1/3 innings. Prince Fielder hit a solo shot in the second inning going 2 for 4 with two RBI. Alex Gordon homered in the second inning, and Billy Butler had an RBI single in the eighth giving the Royals their two runs. There was a moment of concern for Detroit in the fifth inning though, when a routine throw back from Alex Avila deflected off of plate umpire Bill Welke, causing the ball to skid on the ground towards Verlander. Justin pounced on it with his glove momentarily hurting his arm. Verlander chose to stay in the game going three more innings. Jose Valverde came on in the ninth to a smattering of boos, but ended the game unscathed.
Detroit will try to make it two in a row on Tuesday night sending Anibal Sanchez (8-13, 4.14) to the mound to face Bruce Chen (11-12, 5.22)
