The Tigers beat the Twins on Sunday 2-1 behind a great pitching performance from starter Anibal Sanchez, and a two-run homer from Prince Fielder. Sanchez surrendered just one run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. His only blemish, an RBI single to Twins short-stop Pedro Florimon giving the Twins a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning. Phil Coke(2-3) would come in to finish the seventh for the eventual win. The Twins lead would be short lived though, as Detroit roared back in the eighth inning when Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer off reliever Jared Burton to put Detroit up for good 2-1. Tiger reliever Jose Valverde collected his 34th save of the season pitching a 1,2,3, ninth. The Tigers are now up on the White Sox by three games with three to go. Chicago lost to Tampa today 6-2 today. Detroit's magic number now is 1. The Tigers can win their second consecutive AL Central Division with a win in Kansas City on Monday or a Chicago loss to Cleveland.
Detroit will send RHP Rick Porcello (9-12, 4.68) to the mound in the series opener on Monday night to face LHP Bruce Chen
(11-13, 5.13) for a 8:10 start.
