The Detroit Tigers' bats came to life as they beat the Kansas City Royals, 6-3 to become back-to-back American League Central Division Champions. The last time Detroit accomplished that feat was way back in the 1934-35 season. Jhonny Peralta started off the scoring for Detroit with a home-run in the fifth inning. Rick Porcello pitched five innings giving up just one run on just four hits, including a home-run in the sixth to Alex Gordon.
Detroit expolded in the sixth inning with Miguel Cabrera hitting his 44th homerun of the season, going 4-for-5 on the night, putting him in the driver's seat for the Triple Crown. Gerald Laird closed out the inning, hitting a three-run double giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Kansas City scored two runs of their own in the sixth, and one in the eighth to make it 6-3. Jose Valverde held off the Royals in the ninth earning his 35th save in 40 chances.
Detroit will now wait to find out who their divisional foe will be, as that will be determined in the next few days. Meanwhile they will send RHP Doug Fister (10-9, 3.38) to the mound on Tuesday night to face RHP Jeremy Guthrie (7-12, 4.82) at 8 pm.
