DETROIT TIGERS - 2012 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 8-1 on Thursday afternoon sweeping them out of the ALCS. Detroit won
their second American League pennant in seven years and now move on to the World Series. The peerless starting pitching for Detroit continued as Max Scherzer kept New York hitless into the sixth inning while striking out ten Yankees. The Tiger bats roared to life putting up 8 runs on the day.
ALCS MVP Delmon Young drove in the first run of the day scoring Omar Infante. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer followed by the first of two homers from Jhonny Peralta to go up 6-0 in the fourth inning. Austin Jackson also homered in the eighth inning scoring the Tigers eighth run. New York managed their only run in the sixth when Nick Swisher doubled, scoring Eduardo Nunez from third base.
Detroit's bullpen came through yet again with Drew Smyly and Octavio Dotel set the plate for Phil Coke who pitched the eighth and ninth inning preserving the win for Scherzer. The game ended when Prince Fielder caught a Jayson Nix popup causing the hometown fans to erupt in jubilation. Detroit will have five days off before the World Series starts next Wednesday at either St. Louis or San Francisco.
