Tempers flare as Tigers fall to White Sox, 6-3
The Detroit Tigers were unable to hold on to a 3-run lead, thanks to a 6th-inning grand slam homerun by White Sox rookie Josh Phegley, which led to a 6-3 loss to Chicago at Comerica Park.
However, the highlight of the day involved a near scuffle in the same inning. After White Sox starter Chris Sale threw under Prince Fielder’s chin an inning earlier, benches cleared in the top of the sixth after Tigers right-hander Luke Putkonen retaliated for that pitch with one of his own, a fastball behind Chicago's shortstop Alexei Ramirez.
Players spilled onto the field and after three rounds of arguments with the umpires, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected. Before the chaos ensued, Miguel Cabrera recorded his 30th homerun of the season. Matt Tuiasosopo homered in the 2nd inning — his third in as many starts — and Victor Martinez upped his hitting streak to 13 games with a 3-for-4 day.
Detroit will wrap up the first half the 2013 season this weekend with a 3-game series against the Texas Rangers, starting this Friday night at 7 pm inside Comerica Park.
