Despite 8-0 loss to Seattle, Tigers reduce magic number to 5
Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma shut down the Tigers' lineup for eight innings, giving up just four hits as Seattle shutout Detroit, 8-0, at Comerica Park. The good news for the Tigers is that Cleveland lost to Kansas City, 7-2, which allowed them to reduce their magic number in the AL Central Division to 5.
Justin Verlander threw 124 pitches over seven innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six. Going into the 8th inning, Iwakuma retired 11 in a row before Austin Jackson ended that streak with a one-out single.
Detroit will wrap up the 4-game series with Seattle at Comerica Park this Thursday afternoon at 1 pm before hosting the Chicago White Sox over the weekend.
