The Los Angeles Angels blasted the Detroit Tigers pitchers for 17 hits on their way to a 12-7 win in the opener of a four-game weekend set at Comerica Park.

Doing most of the damage was Angels rookie first baseman Mark Trumbo, who was a single short of hitting for the cycle. He got things started with a two-run homer in the second inning that was, at first, ruled a triple until instant replay showed the ball hit the leftfield foul pole. He finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.

Despite the loss, Miguel Cabrera hit his 22nd homer of the season for Tigers in the 2nd inning.

In the 3rd inning, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected for arguing that a pitch had hit Austin Jackson.

Tension began to rise in the 4th inning as L.A.'s Howie Kendrick kicked things off with an infield single and Trumbo followed with a triple. Peter Bourjos hit his second double of the game to put Los Angeles up 5-2, which resulted in Tigers starting pitcher Brad Penny yelling at catcher Victor Martinez. The two were calmed down by pitching coach Jeff Jones, but Penny was pulled two batters later after Erick Aybar’s RBI single.

The Tigers will look to rebound from this loss against the Angels this Friday night inside Comerica Park at 7 pm.

Postgame comments from the Tigers: SS Jhonny Peralta, 1B Miguel Cabrera, pitcher Brad Penny, & 3B Wilson Benemit
