Philadelphia wins their 5th NL East division championship
The Philadelphia Phillies won another division crown, and Hunter Pence is along for his first postseason ride.
Roy Oswalt threw seven dominant innings and Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam as the Phillies clinched their fifth straight NL East title with a 9-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.
In a season where nothing less than a World Series championship would be considered a success, there wasn’t much of a party on the field. The Phillies had a been-there, done-that attitude toward winning the division last year, and this time was no different.
NATIONAL LEAGUE - Milwaukee's magic number is 5 in the Central while Arizona is still stuck at 6 in the West with their loss last night. Atlanta's magic number is down to 7 in the wild card race after their win over the N.Y. Mets.
AMERICAN LEAGUE - Texas reduced their magic number to 7 in the West with their win over Seattle while the N.Y. Yankees in the East have their magic number down to 8. In the wild card race, Boston's magic number stalls at 9 after losing to Tampa Bay, who are 3 games back behind the Red Sox.
