Titans take down Loyola, 80-71 in 1st round of HL tourney

Five Titans scored in double figures – led by senior Eli Holman's 20 points – as 3rd-seeded Detroit advanced to the second round of the Horizon League Tournament with an 80-71 victory over the #10 Loyola Ramblers at Calihan Hall.

In a balanced attack, Detroit got double digits from five different players and made a concerted effort to get to the free throw line, knocking down 30-of-36 from the line. The Titans also turned Loyola over 23 times to help keep the Ramblers at bay.

Senior Chase Simon had 19 points, junior Doug Anderson had 18, and junior Jason Calliste & sophomore Ray McCallum each added 10 for the win. But, it was Holman's inside presence that proved to be the difference. The newly-minted Horizon League Sixth Man of the Year made all six of his shots from the floor and went 8-of-12 from the line in his 27 minutes off the bench.

The Titans now move on to the quarterfinal round, which will be held at top-seed Valparaiso this Friday night where they will take on #6 Youngstown State, who won 77-60 in their first round game over #7 Green Bay. The winner of that game will face #2 Cleveland State on Saturday at Valpo.
