CMU wins and WMU falls in 1st round of women's MAC tourney
The #5 Central Michigan Chippewas made their way to the 2nd round of the MAC Women's Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio with an 86-62 win over the #12 Ball State Cardinals.
Central Michigan used a 6-0 run to begin the game and never looked back as they secured a spot against Ohio, who defeated Kent State 58-40, in the quarterfinals of the MAC tournament this Wednesday at noon.
The CMU defense forced the Cardinals into 28 turnovers that led to 22 points. The Chippewas also out-rebounded the visitors by a count of 53-50 and 22-11 on the offensive boards. Central had its second highest steal total of the season at 15.
Meanwhile in DeKalb, IL, the #10 Western Michigan Broncos had its season come to a close as they fell to the #7 Northern Illinois Huskies, 68-51, in the first round of the MAC Women's Tournament.
Northern Illinois shot 45.8% in the first half and was lights out in the second half, connecting on 82.4%, missing only three shots from the floor (14-for-17). NIU finished the game at 61% shooting.
Western Michigan shot 42.9% in the second half and ended the game hitting only 32.7%. The Broncos forced NIU into 19 turnovers, 15 in the second half. Western Michigan concludes the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 8-22 and finished fifth in the MAC West with a 5-11 record.
