Royals sweep into World Series; Giants take command 3-1
After nearly three decades, the Kansas City Royals are headed to their first World Series since 1985 after finishing a four-game sweep in the American League Championship Series with a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Now, the Royals will carry an 11-game playoff win streak into the World Series, one shy of the major league record. That includes their first eight this season, something that has never been done before in postseason history. Kansas City beat Oakland in a 12-inning wild-card thriller, then swept the Los Angeles Angels in the AL Divisional Series.
Thanks to the Americal League winning the All-Star game, Kansas City will host Game 1 of the 2014 World Series this Tuesday night against the winner of the NLCS between the Giants and Cardinals.
Buster Posey drove in three runs to cap off another rally as the San Francisco Giants took advantage of poor defense by first baseman Matt Adams in defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, to move within one victory of the World Series.
Leading the National League Championship Series 3-1, Madison Bumgarner will look to pitch San Francisco to another NL pennant this Thursday night at 8 pm ET in Game 5 while Adam Wainwright will start for St. Louis, who now faces the same daunting deficit the Giants overcame to beat the Cardinals in the 2012 NLCS.
