Rutgers pound UNC in Quick Lane Bowl; Dogs & Pack prevail
Freshman running back Josh Hicks rushed for 202 yards and a touchdown as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights roughed up the North Carolina Tar Heels, 40-21, in the inaugural Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field. Senior quarterback Gary Nova threw for 184 yards & two touchdowns and freshman Robert Martin ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Scarlet Knights, who finished their first year in the Big Ten at 8-5.
Houston Bates, who had 4 1/2 sacks in one game as opposed to the three seasons he spent in Illinois, was chosen to be MVP of the game after the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs defeated the Fighting Illini, 35-18, at the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Kenneth Dixon became Louisiana Tech's career leader in yards rushing, finishing with 63 for a total of 3,410 in three seasons.
Under second-year head coach Dave Doeren, the North Carolina State Wolfpack took over the St. Petersburg Bowl with a 34-27 victory over the Central Florida Knights. NC State (8-5) dominated for three quarters before Justin Holman threw a pair of 4th-quarter touchdown passes to help UCF pull within seven.
