Deuces Wild: Aggies & Irish pull off upsets to title game
Sydney Colson drove the length of the floor and found a cutting Tyra White for a layup with 3.3 seconds left to give the #2 Aggies a thrilling 63-62 victory over #1 Stanford, which goes home from its fourth straight Final Four without a championship. The teams traded leads five times in the final minute, capping A&M’s remarkable rally from a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes.
The Aggies (32-5) will have a chance to celebrate this Tuesday night in a year the program produced its first All-American, Danielle Adams, and broke through on the national stage by beating Baylor last week after three losses to the top-seeded Bears this season.
Skylar Diggins was up to the task and Notre Dame will play for a national championship because of her excellent play.
The sensational sophomore guard scored 28 points and hot-shooting #2 Notre Dame upset #1 UConn 72-63, ending the brilliant career of Maya Moore and the Huskies’ quest for a third straight national championship.
Notre Dame was 0-3 against its Big East rival this season but the Irish had all the answers this time for the Huskies, who lost for just the second time in three seasons. Notre Dame had already beaten Tennessee in the NCAA tournament, ending a 20-game skid against the Volunteers.
Moore finished with 36 points, including 12 straight as she tried to rally the Huskies from a 12-point deficit in the final 6 minutes, but it wasn’t enough for UConn (36-2).
This Tuesday night at 8:30 pm ET, the women's national championship will feature a pair of #2 seeds as Notre Dame will virtually play a home game against the Aggies of Texas A&M at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN.
