CMU upsets Iowa; MSU defeats EMU; U-M falls to Irish
Senior kicker David Harman booted a 47-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to lift the Central Michigan Chippewas to a thrilling, come-from-behind, 32-31 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium. The kick completed an epic rally that saw the Chippewas score nine points in the game’s final 45 seconds. The win was CMU’s first over a Big Ten opponent since September 12, 2009 when the Chippewas similarly used a last second field goal to knock off instate rival Michigan State, 29-27 in East Lansing.
Western Michigan turned the heat up on defense against Connecticut and a late defensive play turned out to be the difference as the Broncos defeated the Huskies, 30-24 at Waldo Stadium. With the win, Western improved to 2-2 on the season. Alex Carder passed for 237 yards & a touchdown, and two players - Josh Schaffer & Jaime Wilson - each broke 100 yards receiving. It was the first time two Broncos surpassed the century mark since Jordan White and Chleb Ravenell did it against Miami (Ohio) on November 16, 2011.
Le'Veon Bell rushed for a career-high 253 yards & a touchdown, despite the struggle the #21 Michigan State Spartans had to deal with in putting away the winless Eastern Michigan Eagles, 23-7. Dan Conroy kicked three field goals for the Spartans, who had failed to score a touchdown for more than seven quarters before Andrew Maxwell hit tight end Dion Sims on a 10-yard pass with 7:19 left in the game.
Michigan's senior quarterback Denard Robinson allowed the Notre Dame players to celebrate, committing five turnovers himself (four interceptions and a fumble) as the Wolverines lost to the Fighting Irish, 13-6. Though only two of the turnovers directly resulted in Notre Dame points, it was enough to be the difference as Michigan (2-2) had so many fewer completed possessions. U-M's defense did its job for most of the night, allowing only one touchdown, making two holds and an end-zone interception when Notre Dame was in scoring range. Yet 13 points were enough for the #11 Fighting Irish’s limited offense.
