Miguel Cabrera homered twice including a grand slam jolt in the eighth inning for his 40th of the year, a career high, as the Tigers trounced the visiting Oakland Athletics 12-2 at Comerica Park Tuesday night. The Tigers got off to a rocky start after surrendering one run starter Max Scherzer had to leave in the second inning with arm fatigue. MRI results showed no structural damage. The Tiger bullpen came out strong though, holding the Athletics to just one more run the rest of the way. Miguel Cabrera, who is chasing the triple crown, and league MVP had a career setting night with two home runs and six RBI. Prince Fielder and Jhonny Peralta added home runs, and Austin Jackson and Quintin Berry added RBI hits. Berry left the game with a shoulder contusion after a diving catch attempt in the seventh inning. X-rays came back negative. Gerald Laird came up with three hits in his start for ailing Alex Avila who is day to day, and still suffering headaches after his collision with Prince Fielder in Sunday's game.
Detroit's performance was matched by the White Sox who defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 to stay three ahead of the Tigers with fifteen games to go. Detroit hopes to continue their winning ways Wednesday night when they send their ace RHP Justin Verlander ( 14-8 ) to face LHP Brett Anderson ( 4-1 ).
