Justin Verlander started off game one of the American League Divisional Series by giving up a homer to lead-off batter Coco Crisp to put the Oakland Athletics up 1-0 in the first inning. Verlander struggled early to find his rhythm rising his pitch count early. Verlander then settled down allowing just the one run through seven innings. Detroit struck back scoring runs in the first, and third innings, and Alex Avila homered in the fifth inning to put the Tigers up 3-1. Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth inning, and Jose Valverde recorded two strike-outs for the save in the ninth. Oakland's Jarrod Parker gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings of work for the loss. Detroit will send Doug Fister to the mound Sunday afternoon to face Oakland's Tommy Milone for a 12:07 start.
