Youngstown State was a mere warmup for anyone who played against them. Not anymore, or at least, not this season. DuShawn Brooks hit a game-high 24 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers in the final minutes, to give the visiting Youngstown State Penguins (5-1, 1-0 HL) a 64-61 win over the Detroit Titans in the Horizon League opener for both teams at Calihan Hall.

UDM sophomore Ray McCallum and senior Chase Simon each had 21 to pace the Titans. McCallum also added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. But thanks to key missed free throws in the 2nd half, the loss snapped the Titans' five-game winning streak over the Penguins.

LaMarcus Lowe blocked three shots to extend his personal streak of at least two blocks in every game this season and added nine rebounds and four points for the home team.

Detroit will continue their four-game homestretch this Saturday afternoon at 2 pm against the Cleveland State Vikings. And on Monday night, Titan legend Dick Vitale returns to Calihan Hall where UDM will wear their 70s throwback uniforms in honor of Vitale against St. John's.

Meanwhile in Muncie, Indiana, the Titan womens' offense was in high gear all night as Detroit raced past the Ball State Cardinals, 87-68, for its first win of the season.

Detroit (1-6) shot 62% from the field – including 75% in the second half as they hit 21-of-28 shots. UDM was also 12-of-16 from the free throw line, 7-of-15 from three, and came away with 25 assists.

The Titans' 87 points were the most since they netted 90 last season in a 90-76 win at Milwaukee, while their 25 assists are the most since they had 25 in a 76-75 double overtime triumph at Eastern Michigan in 2008.

Four Titans were in double figures led by freshman Shareta Brown's 21 points and nine rebounds. The rookie went 7-of-7 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She also tallied a season-high five assists, three steals and a block. Junior Demeisha Fambro posted a season-high 21 points, hitting 9-of-12 field goals, including three 3-pointers. Senior Lauren Allen also had a season-best 11 points, while junior Yar Shayok was the fourth player in double-digits, tying her season-high with 11 points and grabbing five rebounds.

The women will return to their home state as Detroit visits Michigan State on Tuesday at 7 pm before hosting the Michigan Wolverines next Thursday.
