Mikael Samuelsson scored at 12:05 of the first period followed by a goal from Pavel Datsyuk for a 2-0 lead in the first period. Jimmy Howard went to work with 18 saves and the Wings stopped the Sabres twice on 5-3 powerplays.
Ryan Miller had 32 saves, while Detroit outshot Buffalo 16-4 in the third period. The Wings won 35 out of the 58 faceoffs.
