Western men & women prevail; MSU ladies fall to Notre Dame
Connar Tava scored 21 points and Tucker Haymond added 19 points as the Western Michigan Broncos defeated the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 82-71.
The pair combined to hit 15-of-20 shots as the Broncos (2-0) shot 57%, including 9-of-18 from 3-point range. Western Michigan also went 15-of-17 from the foul line with Tava, who also grabbed 10 rebounds and had five assists, hitting all seven of his free throws. Tommie McCune led Oakland (0-3) with a career-high 27 points while Kahil Felder had 14 points, eight assists, and four steals.
Wetsern's next game will be this Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo when they host Drake at 1 pm while Oakland will take the weekend off until Monday night when they host Western Carolina at 7 pm.
While the men were in Rochester taking care of business, the women of Western Michigan defeated the North Dakota State Bison, 74-59, at University Arena. The Broncos are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
WMU's junior forward Jessica Jessing led the way in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 of her game & career-high 15 points, as well as grabbing four of her five rebounds in the 1st half.
The Broncos will head to Ann Arbor this Sunday afternoon for their first road game of the season as they take on Michigan at 2 pm.
Jewell Loyd Loyd had 28 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals to lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 71-63 victory over the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing.
Aerial Powers scored 27 points and Tori Jankoska added 20 points for the Spartans (1-1), but Michigan State struggled to score in the 2nd half and couldn't stop the Irish.
MSU will remain home for the next four games, beginning with a matchup against IUPUI this Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
